In this paper we present work on a project funded by the National Science Foundation with a goal of unifying the Artificial Intelligence (AI) course around the theme of machine learning. Our work involves the development and testing of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics that emphasizes the relationship between AI and computer science. Several hands-on laboratory projects that can be closely integrated into an introductory AI course have been developed. We present an overview of one of the projects and describe the associated curricular materials that have been developed. The project uses machine learning as a theme to unify core AI topics in the context of the N-puzzle game. Games provide a rich framework to introduce students to search fundamentals and other core AI concepts. The paper presents several pedagogical possibilities for the N-puzzle game, the rich challenge it offers, and summarizes our experiences using it

Enhancing Undergraduate AI Courses through Machine Learning Projects

It is generally recognized that an undergraduate introductory Artificial Intelligence course is challenging to teach. This is, in part, due to the diverse and seemingly disconnected core topics that are typically covered. The paper presents work funded by the National Science Foundation to address this problem and to enhance the student learning experience in the course. Our work involves the development of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics through a unifying theme of machine learning. A suite of hands-on semester-long projects are developed, each involving the design and implementation of a learning system that enhances a commonly-deployed application. The projects use machine learning as a unifying theme to tie together the core AI topics. In this paper, we will first provide an overview of our model and the projects being developed and will then present in some detail our experiences with one of the projects – Web User Profiling which we have used in our AI class

Unifying an Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Course through Machine Learning Laboratory Experiences

This paper presents work on a collaborative project funded by the National Science Foundation that incorporates machine learning as a unifying theme to teach fundamental concepts typically covered in the introductory Artificial Intelligence courses. The project involves the development of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics. This is accomplished through the development, implementation, and testing of a suite of adaptable, hands-on laboratory projects that can be closely integrated into the AI course. Through the design and implementation of learning systems that enhance commonly-deployed applications, our model acknowledges that intelligent systems are best taught through their application to challenging problems. The goals of the project are to (1) enhance the student learning experience in the AI course, (2) increase student interest and motivation to learn AI by providing a framework for the presentation of the major AI topics that emphasizes the strong connection between AI and computer science and engineering, and (3) highlight the bridge that machine learning provides between AI technology and modern software engineering

Effect of alirocumab on mortality after acute coronary syndromes. An analysis of the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES randomized clinical trial

Background: Previous trials of PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9) inhibitors demonstrated reductions in major adverse cardiovascular events, but not death. We assessed the effects of alirocumab on death after index acute coronary syndrome. Methods: ODYSSEY OUTCOMES (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab) was a double-blind, randomized comparison of alirocumab or placebo in 18 924 patients who had an ACS 1 to 12 months previously and elevated atherogenic lipoproteins despite intensive statin therapy. Alirocumab dose was blindly titrated to target achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) between 25 and 50 mg/dL. We examined the effects of treatment on all-cause death and its components, cardiovascular and noncardiovascular death, with log-rank testing. Joint semiparametric models tested associations between nonfatal cardiovascular events and cardiovascular or noncardiovascular death. Results: Median follow-up was 2.8 years. Death occurred in 334 (3.5%) and 392 (4.1%) patients, respectively, in the alirocumab and placebo groups (hazard ratio [HR], 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.98; P=0.03, nominal P value). This resulted from nonsignificantly fewer cardiovascular (240 [2.5%] vs 271 [2.9%]; HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.74 to 1.05; P=0.15) and noncardiovascular (94 [1.0%] vs 121 [1.3%]; HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.59 to 1.01; P=0.06) deaths with alirocumab. In a prespecified analysis of 8242 patients eligible for ≥3 years follow-up, alirocumab reduced death (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.65 to 0.94; P=0.01). Patients with nonfatal cardiovascular events were at increased risk for cardiovascular and noncardiovascular deaths (P<0.0001 for the associations). Alirocumab reduced total nonfatal cardiovascular events (P<0.001) and thereby may have attenuated the number of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular deaths. A post hoc analysis found that, compared to patients with lower LDL-C, patients with baseline LDL-C ≥100 mg/dL (2.59 mmol/L) had a greater absolute risk of death and a larger mortality benefit from alirocumab (HR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.56 to 0.90; Pinteraction=0.007). In the alirocumab group, all-cause death declined wit h achieved LDL-C at 4 months of treatment, to a level of approximately 30 mg/dL (adjusted P=0.017 for linear trend). Conclusions: Alirocumab added to intensive statin therapy has the potential to reduce death after acute coronary syndrome, particularly if treatment is maintained for ≥3 years, if baseline LDL-C is ≥100 mg/dL, or if achieved LDL-C is low. Generalization under Implication by lambda-Subsumption

. The present paper discusses a generalization operator based on the -subsumption ordering between Horn clauses introduced by the author elsewhere. It has been shown that -subsumption is strictly stronger than `-subsumption and a local equivalent of generalized subsumption. With some language restrictions it is decidable and possesses some other useful properties. Most importantly it allows defining a non-trivial upper bound of the -subsumption generalization hierarchy without the use of negative examples. Consequently this allows solving a version of the ILP task with positive-only examples. 1 Introduction The basic problem that most of the approaches in Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) face is how to make the search in the space of clauses more efficient. Usually for this purpose the search space is structured as a subsumption hierarchy by some generality ordering. Two types of orderings are mostly used -- `-subsumption and logical implication. In contrast to implication `-subsum..

A Tool for Building Connectionist-like Networks Based on Term Unification

The paper presents a network modeling tool called Net-Clause Language (NCL), integrating some connectionist-like and some symbolic processing features in a unified computational environment. Unlike the other connectionist symbol processing approaches, NCL represents and processes symbols not by implementing them as patterns of activity in a traditional neural network, rather it uses some connectionist ideas to organize symbolic computation in a more flexible way. The paper presents two examples (deductive inference and image processing) which show how the connectionist-like and symbolic features of NCL can benefit each from the other. 1 Introduction The long standing symbolic versus connectionist debate in AI has proved that none of the approaches taken in isolation could be fruitful. Now it is widely acknowledged that instead of looking for a single universal formalism an AI system should be built out of diverse components, some connectionist and some symbolic. This view is well expr..

An Algebraic Approach to Inductive Learning

    No full text
The paper presents an approach to inductive machine learning based on a consistent integration of the generalization-based (such as inductive learning from examples) and metric-based (such as agglomerative clustering) approaches. The approach stems from the natural idea (formally studied within lattice theory) to estimate the similarity between two objects in a hierarchical structure by the distances to their closest common parent. The hierarchies used are subsumption lattices induced by generalization operatiors (e.g. lgg) commonly used in inductive learning. Using some results from the theory the paper defines a unified framework for solving basic inductive learning tasks. An algorithm for this purpose is proposed and its performance is illustrated by examples. Introduction Inductive learning addresses mainly classification tasks where a series of training examples (instances) are supplied to the learning system and the latter builds an intensional or extensional rep..
